As many as 30 different colours are included in the yarns, producing a unique depth and complexity of colour, inspired by the natural environment of the remote Outer Hebridean islands.

FIRST OF ALL:
The Winter Hats are handcrafted in Toronto where all Tilley Hats and virtually all our travel clothes are made - and where I (Alex Tilley) can keep a watchful eye.
THE CLOTH:
Harris Tweed is the world's only commercially produced HANDWOVEN tweed, and is protected by an act of parliament. Authentic Harris Tweed carries the Orb certification mark, assuring that 100% pure new wool has been dyed, spun, handwoven and finished in the Outer Hebrides. We are priviledged to be working with Donald John Mackay, a renowned weaver based at Luskentyre on the west coast of Harris, and we fully support initiatives to preserve traditional handweaving in the Outer Hebrides.
Harris Tweed is a truly versatile fabric, strong and naturally weatherproof. As many as 30 different colours are included in the yarns, producing a unique depth and complexity of colour, inspired by the natural environment of these remote islands.
To make the Winter Hat interior as comfy as possible, we selected strong, long-lasting polyester. The polyester is 'peached' to make it soft and to help trap your body's heat.
The sweatband is made of comfortable, durable Hydrofil®, which absorbs sweat and wicks it away from your forehead so it can evaporate quickly.
THE GUARANTEE:
Your Hat is guaranteed for life (yours, mine or its) not to wear out or fall apart. We're delighted to think that yours may be passed on to the next generation!
HAT INSURANCE?
It's also insured against loss. If you do lose it, or the family dog destroys it, we'll replace it within two years of the purchase date at half the current catalogue price, through our mail-order department. We always try to meet our clients at least half way!
With your Hat, you'll be provided with "The Straight-Shooter's Statement of Loss of a Tilley Hat" insurance policy. Again, the insurance is for two years, all perils, 50% deductible, and is not issued by Lloyds.
THE STYLE OF THE HAT:
The downward slope of the brim, both front and back, is intentional: the slope protects your forehead and the back of your neck from wind and snow as much as possible. The slope looks rather dashing, doesn't it?
WASHING INSTRUCTIONS:
Tilley Winter Hats are made of fine quality wool. Although they may not shrink if you machine-wash, don’t take a chance: have them dry-cleaned because they are made of wool.
FOR HEAT AND HARD KNOCKS:
Inside the crown of the Hat is a thin layer of closed-cell insulating foam. Heat rises, and the foam stores some of it. This dense foam also softens accidental blows to the noggin. From time to time people tell us how the peculiar qualities of their Tilley Hats have probably saved their lives!
FOR YOUR CONSTANT COMFORT:
Inside the Hat, you'll see at the back a removable Size-Equalization Device held in by Velcro. Its purpose is to permit you to maintain the same comfortable size regardless of the flaps being up or down.
A FOREHEAD WARMER?
Some years ago, I went out for a walk on a cold, windy winter's day. The wind chill was memorable. After a short while my forehead was so painfully cold that I had to retreat home. Remembering the admonition that 'there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear,' I decided that a forehead warmer was necessary. That's why it's there, and I find I use it, and the ear flaps, fairly often.
DON'T LOSE YOUR HAT
The Hat has cotton/spandex knit tuck-away ear and forehead warmers that ‘hug’ your ears and forehead, providing staying power in high winds. Either way, your hat will stay where it belongs!
SECRET POCKET:
Inside the crown is a good-sized pocket sealed with Velcro®. In it, carry your I.D., hotel key, £10 note (in your case, a 20), plus a 20p for an emergency phone call.
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HEAD:
As mentioned above, a Tilley Hat fits lower and more comfortably than other hats. The lower it sits, the larger at that point is one's head circumference. To find your Tilley size, simply measure around your head, just above the eyebrows. Tell us this measurement in inches or centimetres. We'll take it from there.
If you already know your regular hat size, please ask for one size larger when you order your Tilley. For instance, if you're sure you're a 7 1/4‚ order a 7 3/8. We've designed it so you can always make it smaller, but not bigger!
